Healthy Eating Habits Around the Holidays

Healthy Eating Habits Around the Holidays

The holiday season is quickly approaching- and with it come the delicious meals we look forward to all year. From rich desserts to hearty family meals, the holidays are sure to test even the best eating habits. With a little mindfulness and a few tips and tricks, everyone can enjoy the flavors of the season!

One of the best places to start with prepping for an upcoming dinner is the day of. Be sure to still eat meals as you normally would and avoid saving all your calories for your meal later. Try to stay hydrated as well. Herbal teas are not only great to fight the chilly fall weather that comes with this time of year, but some teas may help with digestion after a meal of food you don’t typically eat.

Arguably, one of the best parts of holiday parties is snacking and appetizers before the main event. Try to fill your first plate with protein and vegetables while being mindful of your portion sizes. Prep your own vegetable tray using a low-calorie ranch dip made with plain Greek yogurt and ranch seasoning if you’re worried about not having any type of healthy option where you’re headed.

When it comes to the dinner itself, try to use the plate method. This simply means aiming for a balanced plate with about half of it being made up of vegetables, leaving the rest of the plate for about half protein and half carbohydrates.

We all know what comes after a delicious filling dinner- dessert of course! Don’t restrict yourself by not having any dessert and instead try to enjoy in moderation. Be sure to listen to your body and its hunger cues and stop once you’re feeling satisfied.

Finally, remember that the holiday season is about connection, not perfection! Enjoy the company of your friends and family and try your best to make good choices around the table.
